But just like Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, the ending is different from the historical reality, penning a different, more upbeat story for both Sharon Tate and her Cielo Drive house. Five decades later, we’re still not over what happened that dreadful August night on Cielo Drive, and how could we be? We were reminded of the events in 2017, with the death of Charles Manson, and Quentin Tarantino made us relive parts of that night all over again. Southern California home prices hit another all-time high in December, capping a year of sharp growth that left many first-time buyers frustrated while homeowners counted their equity gains, writes Andrew Khouri. Altman said he and his brother, Josh, worked with the seller on price.
Decades after the house had been knocked down and rebuilt, the odd phenomenon has continued to be reported, even beyond the home’s gates. Reflecting on his return to the home in 1969 he told ABC’s 20/20, “When I came back to that property, I felt safe, secure, loved and beauty…” Reznor has flat out said it’s not, though a closer look into his experiences recording in the house seem to suggest otherwise. A successful record producer and prominent member of Hollywood’s “It” crowd at the time, Melcher crossed paths with Manson and his band of followers, known as the “Family,” in 1968. Melcher himself met Manson through his friend and client Dennis Wilson, drummer of The Beach Boys, who allowed the Manson Family to stay with him rent-free for several months that spring.

In fact, it sat on the market for more than three years, dropping in price from $12 million to $7.7 million by December 1999, until it was finally purchased for $6,375,000 in January 2000. The infamous murder house was demolished and replaced with a much bigger estate dubbed Villa Bella, boasting a new address of Cielo Drive. The new house looks nothing like the original building, and there’s no trace of the old Cielo Drive today. On August 8, 1969, eight months pregnant actress Sharon Tate was enjoying a cool summer evening at Cielo Drive, a private, shabby chic Beverly Hills estate she rented with her husband, director Roman Polanski.

Whatever the case, when Tate and Polanski’s maid, Winifred Chapman, ran down the long driveway screaming of murder and death and bodies and blood on the morning of August 9, 1969, Cielo Drive’s reputation was sealed. Having managed to track Melcher down, rock star wannabe Manson convinced the producer to audition him on two separate occasions at the cult leader’s Spahn Ranch headquarters. Melcher’s ultimate refusal to sign him to a recording contract was the final straw, angering the unhinged cult leader to the point of murder. Melcher, during one of the Manson trials, testified that was introduced to Manson at Wilson’s Sunset Boulevard home in the summer of 1968. Famously, Wilson befriended the cult leader after picking up two of his followers during a drive through Malibu. Later that day, Manson accompanied Wilson to drop Melcher off at his home on Cielo Drive.

CIELO DRIVE AFTER THE MURDERS
Nearly five months later, Manson ordered his followers to descend upon the home and murder everyone inside. According to Altobellli's court testimony, Manson visited the home on March 23, 1969, looking for Melcher. Altobelli was on the premises and informed him that Melcher moved out in January.
The director’s ninth movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, hit the screens at a time marked by the 50-year anniversary of the murders. "It's in one of the most exclusive areas of Beverly Hills and you're talking about land — it's not the same house or anything," he said of the Manson murders. "This is a house that, now with the wildlife ordinance, you're not going to be able to do a garage," Altman said.
"You're not going to be able to do basements — and this basement is one of the most beautiful movie theaters I've ever seen. And it also has parking for 50 cars." Another tidbit that may influence buyers is that this home was constructed on the site of the murder of Sharon Tate and four house guests by the Manson Family in 1969. That property, which had the address of Cielo Drive, was demolished in 1994, and the current one was built in 1996 with the new address of Cielo Drive.
