From its 1980s roots in Black, Latinx, and queer communities in cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New York, electronic dance music exploded in the 1990s, taking techno, rave, jungle, and other permutations around the globe.

The percussive rhythms, wandering bass, occasional synth hits and whispery vocals are all beautifully simple, making for a laid-back, funky gem when mixed together. In the late 1980s, Nu Groove Records launched and nurtured the careers of Rheji Burrell and Rhano Burrell, collectively known as Burrell (after a brief stay on Virgin America via Timmy Regisford and Frank Mendez). The Burrells created the "New York Underground" sound of house, and they did more than 30 releases on this label featuring this sound. Rachel Cain, better known as Screamin' Rachael, co-founder of the highly influential house label Trax Records, was previously involved in the burgeoning punk scene.

Born and raised in the Bronx, he cut his teeth as a DJ in New York City’s clubs and gay bathhouses. But he moved to Chicago in 1977, specifically to become Saturday night resident at The Warehouse, a club that his friend Robert Williams was opening. In fact he was only there for five years, during which time the phrase “house music” was used by local record stores to refer to the mostly disco records (often older disco), which he was extending with tape edits and double copies at the club. Other DJs in clubs and radio were following suit, and notably the Hot Mix 5 team (featuring DJs like Ralphi Rosario and Farley “Jackmaster” Funk) on WBMX helped cement this as the sound of Chicago.

Dubs of tracks by artists who also had one foot in soulful or tribal house, like Miami’s Murk, New Jersey’s Kerri Chandler, New York’s Mood II Swing with their classic “Closer”, and the late Angel Moraes also became an important part of the mix. DJ Pierre’s “wild pitch” sound on “Generate Power” and “Rise From Your Grave” created a tougher, more intense deepness that was all about accumulating tension, inspiring extraordinary music from others in the likes of X-Press 2’s “Muzik XPress” and Felix Da Housecat’s “Freakadelika”.

In Detroit during the early and mid-1980s, a new kind of electronic dance music began to emerge around Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three. The artists fused eclectic, futuristic sounds into a signature Detroit dance sound that was a main influence for the later techno genre. During the 2010s, multiple new sounds in house music were developed by DJs, producers, and artists. Sweden pioneered the "Festival progressive house" genre with the emergence of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, and Steve Angello. While all three artists had solo careers, when they formed a trio called Swedish House Mafia, it showed that house could still produce chart-topping hits, such as their 2012 single "Don't You Worry Child", which cracked the Billboard top 10.
